Greetings everyone:
I recently read Master K's new book "The Beauty of Kinbaku" and
exchanged messages with him regarding the scholastic standard of this
work. Although the book does not include footnotes that directly
match text to references in the bibliography, Master K assured me
that this was done at the behest of the publisher that wishes the
book to be a "fun read" instead of being "overtly scholarly". For
Master K, scholarship is most important to him, as he included "in
every section of the book... specific references to books and authors
that will allow the interested reader(s)... to research further on
their own".
I am convinced of Master K's sincerity in his scholarly approach to
the investigation of the art of Kinbaku. In the burgeoning Shibari
landscape in the west, it is indeed rare to have a seasoned
practitioner that investigates this subject from the original
Japanese sources, uncompromised by an ulterior motive to promote
commercial (adult-oriented) products, and above all, to approach the
art with a serious academic attitude. We are indeed fortunate to
have Master K share his work with us in the form of "The Beauty of
Kinbaku". Even without footnotes, I am sure any interested reader
that asks a book-related question properly will receive candid and
knowledgeable answer from Master K.
I encourage every person interested in Kinbaku to purchase this
book. It is likely that for most people, because of the formidable
language barrier, reading Master K's present composition will be as
close as they will get to the original Japanese sources for the
foreseeable future.
